Amazing broccoli crop this year!

This past Saturday was our last Saturday market at Goochland. It has been another great year. The crowds were down this year, and I am not sure of the reason for that. It has been rough getting up and getting there every Saturday since May, but it is worth it in the end. I never thought farming would take quite this much dedication.

We still have two weekday markets that are continuing for a while. The winter crops are in good, and the broccoli is amazing!

Almost the end of another season

Well I guess I am not good at keeping up with the blogging. It will help that I am now not using dial-up. I can't believe how slow that was. Our market season is almost over. Only one more Saturday market. They closed this weeks because of potential rain. Obviously the ones making that decision do not depend on the markets as their main source of income. Things still grow, and have to come to market in the rain. Well, we are taking the opportunity to head to Asheville and Gatlinburg this weekend instead. I can't wait to see the foliage, and do a little sightseeing. It has been a long summer without a break.
Chris planted a whole field of onions yesterday. I still need to get the garlic in the ground, but it will have to be next week. The greens look great. They have really needed the rain and they have shot up. We did quite a few this year. The kale looks especially yummy. I need to get some recipes on here for how to use it.
Next week we will be at the Lakeside market on Wednesday, and then will have our last Goochland Market. Hope to see a nice crowd turn out.

Long Market Day

Yesterday Chris and I had two markets to attend. The first was from 10-2 and the second, 3:30-7:00. That made for a very long day. The first market was a little slow, but the afternoon market picked up pace a little. Right now at the market we have flowers, herbs, strawberries, onions, and a few greens. I know that everyone is waiting for more of the produce to come in. I was excited to see that the squash have little babies on them.
I hope to load some pictures soon. The goats and the chickens are growing so fast, that I hope to get some pictures of them up while they are still babies. Our barn cat "Spooky", has had her litter, but we are not sure where they are yet.
Up for today is the market at Lakeside, which I will do by myself, and then I work tonight 11-7. Sounds like a long day huh? It will be! I am sure this afternoon's market will be a little slow, but there is always hope.

Giving this Blogging a try

This is my first post for my new blog. My family and I are having such a great time on our farm, that I thought I would share. I am a nurse, and my husband is now farming full-time. We are vegetable farmers, that are giving the trade of market farming a go.
My husband and his family have farmed most of their lives, but he is back to it after a sixteen year hiatus. Most of this is new to me, and I am learning as I go. We have two girls (six and eight), who are making this even more enjoyable. We do three markets a week now, and love every minute of that part. I have never been so busy or tired in my life, but I am loving it!
